Kevin McCarthy Put On Public Notice For Enabling Insurrection

Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) is among those fed up with House GOP leader Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) for helping to enable the continued festering of pro-insurrection sentiments within the Republican Party. Overall, the GOP has largely yet to meaningfully make up for its direct role in the deadly violence that unfolded at the Capitol in January. Even after that violence unfolded, scores of Republican members of the House still opted to vote against certifying the entirety of the results of the election — giving yet another burst of oxygen to the false idea that last year’s presidential election was somehow not secure, which is exactly the notion that drove the riot.

Specifically, Swalwell spoke on Saturday in opposition to the rally that unfolded outside the Capitol in support of those who’ve been charged for their role in the January Capitol riot. He pointedly commented as follows:

‘Blessed by @GOPLeader McCarthy, Radical Republicans are celebrating cop killers & terrorists at the US Capitol. McCarthy condones this as many injured Jan. 6 officers have not yet returned to work. This is like holding a 9/11 vigil…for the hijackers. Nice work, Kevin.’

Not a whole lot of people turned out for that event — according to U.S. Capitol Police, around 400 or 450 people in total were in the protest area on Saturday, excluding law enforcement personnel. That number does, however, seemingly include members of the media (a lot of whom were at the event) and counter-protesters, leaving the size of the main protest crowd at an even smaller level. Notably, Trump had described the rally prior to its scheduled time as a “setup,” saying that “if people don’t show up they’ll say, ‘Oh, it’s a lack of spirit.’ And if people do show up they’ll be harassed.” The rally was put together by Look Ahead America, an organization helmed by a former Trump campaign staffer.
