You’d think that the president who, during the election season, managed to garner the support of the conservative Christian crowd would be someone who actually conformed to the ideals that conservative Christians lay out for themselves.
Such has not proven to be the case.
Earlier this year, the story rocketed to the front of the national political conversation of the president’s team having paid an adult film actress named Stormy Daniels $130,000 in hush money meant — along with its accompanying nondisclosure agreement — to keep her quiet about an alleged affair with the man who is now president.
Daniels is now, with the help of her lawyer Michael Avenatti, suing to be released from that agreement, claiming it to be invalid because the president himself never signed it.
The Trump team initially countered with the claim that the contract negotiations and hush money payment were carried out without the involvement of the president. The dispute — in which the Trump team is seeking tens of millions of dollars in damages from Daniels for supposedly violating the agreement — is still being settled in court.
In the midst of all of this, a sit-down that Daniels did with Anderson Cooper will be airing as a part of this week’s edition of 60 Minutes. Some are anxiously awaiting the interview being aired, ready and eager to take in whatever exactly it will reveal about the commander-in-chief who has long captured the imaginations of conservative Christian Americans.
On Sunday afternoon, ahead of Anderson Cooper’s sit-down with Daniels finally airing, the hashtag “#StormyDanielsDay” began trending on Twitter, organizing the Twittersphere’s collective thoughts on the matter.
One user noted the hypocrisy of the Republican Party collectively looking the other way when it comes to the scandal of Trump’s affair with Daniels when in the 1990’s, the collective line from the GOP was that lying about an affair was grounds for impeachment.
Other Twitter users noted the same kind of thing.
The irony is that among the top tweets under the hashtag are posts from Republicans that somewhat prove the above users’ points.
If only the GOP could apply their newfound apparent disregard for what happens between “consenting adults” to other situations and stop with the incessant anti-LGBT rhetoric.
Other Twitter users pointed out the sheer ridiculousness of the situation.
There are concerning aspects to the situation besides the salacious aspect.
Some have raised legal questions about whether or not the $130,000 paid to Daniels should be considered a campaign donation, since it was meant to help the Trump campaign through keeping her quiet.
Daniels’ lawyer, Michael Avenatti has claimed to have heard the stories of at least six other women that are similar to that of his client, so the legal questions continue on from there.
It’s worth noting that it’s hardly far fetched for the president to have engaged in the behavior he’s alleged to have with Stormy Daniels, carrying on with her — and at least one other woman — while married to Melania.
He has in the past been caught on tape bragging about his supposed freedom to commit sexual assault, and in the face of the allegations of him actually having done so, this scandal isn’t the worst thing that can be said about the Trump administration.
