For anyone who expected a massive Twitter tantrum following the release of the Inspector General’s report on the Hillary Clinton email server investigation, which debunked all of Trump’s claims about a “deep state” conspiracy against him, Friday morning went exactly the way we all thought it would.
In order to believe Donald Trump’s assessment of the IG report about the FBI’s handling of the Clinton email investigation, we must believe two very contradictory things. The first is that everything in the IG report is true regarding the errors and and breaks in protocol that were found. The second is that none of it is true because it did not support Trump’s assertions that the FBI investigation was politically biased by agents who wanted to help Clinton and hurt Trump.
Of course, Fox News is helping to push both of those ideas with a one totally unrelated but predictable conclusion thrown into the mix. Somehow, Fox & Friends has determined that the IG report, which investigated only the steps taken in the Clinton email investigation, “taints” Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into the alleged collusion between the Trump 2016 presidential campaign and Russian government operatives. Those two investigations, however, are entirely unrelated.
The FBI is not currently in charge of the Russian collusion probe. While some FBI agents have been recruited for their expertise in areas like counterespionage and national security, the majority of Mueller’s team previously worked in areas of legal justice unrelated to the intelligence community.
Twitter reminded Trump of all these truths and pointed out his cherry-picking of facts and the lies he’s feeding the public with the help of his friends at Fox News. Read some of their comments below.
