Trump Makes Weird College Football Endorsement – Strokes Coach’s Ego

President Donald Trump retains a curious list of priorities. This Tuesday morning, after Clemson University’s football team beat the University of Alabama in the college football national championship (for the second time in three years), he made sure to indicate to the world that they’d be invited to the White House.

He tweeted:

‘Congratulations to a truly great football team, the Clemson Tigers, on an incredible win last night against a powerful Alabama team. A big win also for the Great State of South Carolina. Look forward to seeing the team, and their brilliant coach, for the second time at the W.H.’

As he indicated, as is tradition for national sports champions, the Clemson Tigers have previously gone to the White House after their championship win in 2017. At that time, the president offered some of his familiar over the top rhetoric and called the championship game they’d won “one of the greatest games he’d ever watched,” the Los Angeles Times shares.

On multiple other occasions, national champions have rebuffed the Trump administration’s invitation to come to D.C. over the president’s incessant belligerence. That standoff reached a ridiculous fever pitch after last year’s Super Bowl, and the Trump administration uninvited the entire Philadelphia Eagles team after a number of players said they wouldn’t be coming. In place of the cancelled celebration for the Eagles, the White House held a bizarre display of nationalistic pride and flag worship in light of the president’s continued contention that NFL players who peacefully protest during the national anthem are committing a grave offense.

There doesn’t seem to be any controversy of that magnitude lined up for the Clemson Tigers’ forthcoming second Trump administration visit, although on its own time, the government still has to deal with the ongoing partial shutdown over the president’s refusal to approve any funding if he doesn’t get what he wants for his wall.
