Evangelical Journalist Resigns After Christianity Today Trump Op-Ed

The Christain Post anti-Donald Trump op-ed set off tsunami waves of controversy. It appears that there is a divide in the evangelical Christian community. There are the traditional evangelicals who espouse morals and caring for the sick, the children, and others. Then, there are the scary Trump-adoring evangelicals. That group worships POTUS to the point of calling him the Second Coming of Jesus Christ.

What the second group of evangelicals failed to recognize was that right between the First and Second Coming, an anti-Christ would appear. The traditional evangelicals have been more put off by the president’s lying, cheating, and adultery.

Journalist and political editor Napp Nazworth has been at The Christian Post since 2011 and has resigned. He said The Post tried to “represent both sides,” according to The Washington Post:

‘I never got the gist they were gung-ho Trumpian types. Everything has escalated with the Christianity Today editorial.’

Nazworth has criticized the commander-in-chief. He noted that the evangelicals who support him “traded their moral authority:”

‘I said, “If you post this, you’re saying, you’re now on team Trump.” I’m just shocked that they would go this path, he said. “even though he felt ‘forced’ to make the decision to quit, the parting was a mutual agreement between him and the outlet.”‘

The Post’s president Reverend Timothy Dalrymple said:

‘We don’t like to lose anyone. We need to stay in conversation with one another even when we disagree.’

Dalrymple wrote an article about the editorial. In it, he said the editors received an “enormous outpouring of notes and messages speaking in deeply emotional terms about their gratitude:”

‘Clearly, there was a profound yearning for some evangelical institution or leader to stand up and say these things. One of the most consistent phrases was ‘stay strong.’ People had rallied to the flag, and they were afraid we would abandon them, afraid we’d buckle under the pressure and bend the knee, and then their disillusionment would be even worse than before.’

Bible teacher Beth Moore tweeted that the op-ed in Christianity Today was “costly” for everyone involved:

‘The ramifications are legit. t would be so much easier to keep your mouth shut. He could’ve just gone on down the road safe and sound. That’s why my hat’s off to him.’

Evangelical leader Doug Birdsall said:

‘I think people have been waiting for someone of [Christianity Today’s] stature to say something. I think Mark’s piece inspires others to be courageous.’

Trump critic and former president of the King’s College Greg Thornbury noted:

‘I was raising $10 million a year. Who do you go to? Beggars can’t be choosers. It’s making payroll. It’s a hostage situation.’

Major evangelical organizational staffer Mae Cannon said:

‘The cost for some of these of speaking out would be losing millions of dollars of donors. The organizations could crumble. Do you compromise the mission of an organization to stand up for a moral issue?’
