President Donald Trump continues to completely fail to grasp the basics of the Coronavirus pandemic, which has claimed the lives of about 144,000 Americans as of mid-Tuesday morning, according to one prominent tally. On Monday evening, hours after he posted a message on Twitter admonishing Americans to wear face masks and calling masks “patriotic,” Trump was caught on camera at a fundraiser at his D.C. hotel without a mask on. There was a crowd at the rally, and many members weren’t wearing masks, either. Those without masks included White House chief of staff Mark Meadows and Republican Congressional candidate Madison Cawthorn, who recently won the Republican primary in the race for Meadows’s recently vacated Congressional seat.

Masks have been well-documented as highly instrumental in an effective fight against the Coronavirus. They curtail the transmission of the virus, meaning that those who might be unaware that they’re carrying it don’t unwittingly spread it to other people. With no current guarantee that Coronavirus cases can be quickly captured by testing, masks are an essential first line of defense. It still took Trump months to acknowledge their importance anyway. He acted like those advocating for masks were somehow conspiring politically against him.
Then, on Monday, he self-confidently tweeted:
‘We are United in our effort to defeat the Invisible China Virus, and many people say that it is Patriotic to wear a face mask when you can’t socially distance. There is nobody more Patriotic than me, your favorite President!’

It’s not a “China Virus”! The Coronavirus has long since been detected across the face of the globe, and some introductions of the virus to the U.S. have been from places like Europe. Yet, Trump’s not calling it the “Europe Virus.” His unwavering commitment to brazen racism is abundantly clear. He seems to try and use it as a smokescreen to try and distract people from his complete and total incompetence when it comes to basic issues of the presidency. He’s a self-deluded, incompetent egomaniac.
Recently, he even claimed that tests “create” Coronavirus cases. They do not. The virus would still spread and cases would still exist and be relevant even if they weren’t confirmed by tests! He just has zero idea what he’s talking about.
