As the Republican Party continues to flounder in the wake of Donald Trump’s exit from the presidency, Jacob Monty — who has raised over $1 million for the GOP over the course of his long affiliation with the party — has announced that he is leaving the Republican Party and registering as a Democrat. During an appearance on CNN this week, Monty cited the GOP’s continuing capitulation to Trump’s whims as underlying his decision. Just this week, Monty noted, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) visited ex-President Trump at the latter’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, where the top Republican posed for a smiling picture with the former president, as though Trump didn’t help incite a deadly insurrection attempt at the U.S. Capitol just this month.

Monty commented as follows:

‘Trump owns the party and Trump has always loved the conspiracy theories and this is Trump’s party now. I tried for four years to try to be a ‘Never Trumper’ in the Republican Party but it’s obvious now, everyone is paying homage to this ex-president. No one will stand up to him… I’m a Texan; I don’t lick anyone’s boots, and to see what we saw this week is disgusting. I’m out. That’s enough. That was a bridge too far for me, and more people are leaving the party.’

Even after Trump is well out of office, a selection of leading Republicans have refused to conclusively acknowledge the fact that the recent presidential election wasn’t rigged in favor of Biden!

During a recent appearance on ABC, Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) refused to acknowledge that the election wasn’t stolen, and more recently, Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves (R) similarly refused to acknowledge that Biden’s win was legitimate. After MSNBC host Chuck Todd asked Reeves whether he believes that Biden “won fair and square,” Reeves said that he believes that “President Biden is our president,” which is a basic reality that should not be in question and doesn’t answer Todd’s question about whether the governor believes that Biden’s presidency is legitimate. The closest that Reeves came to an acknowledgment of reality was his observation that Biden “won the states,” but that statement still doesn’t cover his perspective on the victory’s legitimacy.
