Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) is not abandoning her opposition to the destructiveness of former President Donald Trump just because provocateurs like Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) find issue with her stance. During an appearance on Fox News, Cruz — who, like so many of his fellow, far-right Republicans, often seems startlingly arrogant — said that he believes that Cheney “falls into the category of people who Donald Trump just broke, just shattered.” Cheney is a longtime, self-professed conservative — but her opposition to Trump’s lies about the 2020 presidential election has been too much for Cruz and others to handle. Cheney shut Cruz down on Wednesday, characterizing him as something other than a “real man.”

As she put it, referring to the rhetorical attacks on his wife and father by Donald Trump during the 2016 Republican presidential primary:

‘Trump broke Ted Cruz. A real man would be defending his wife, and his father, and the Constitution.’

Cruz’s behavior reeks of political opportunism. He was a Trump opponent during that presidential primary race, but he has since become an ardent defender of the former president and his behavior to the point that the Texas Senator helped lead the charge to object to the formal certification by Congress of Joe Biden’s presidential election victory earlier this year. More recently, Cruz has been occupying himself with utterly ridiculous nonsense like complaining about the usage of characters from Sesame Street in campaigns promoting vaccinations for children against COVID-19. Characters from the show have been involved in vaccine-related outreach efforts for decades. Cruz is just another cog in the clown show, acting as though everyday Americans concerned with meeting their basic needs should pause for a moment and consider whether Big Bird is out of line.
