Donald Trump believes that he thrust Governor Ron DeSantis (R-FL) into the limelight. But instead of being grateful, the Florida governor has been putting on a show more like a competitor. DeSantis has noticeably refused to endorse Trump for the 2024 presidential race. The Lincoln Project strategists stepped into that void between the ex-president and the governor sowing seeds of doubt.

Trump’s weak defense of the vaccines still places him “uncharacteristically out of step with the hard-line elements of his party’s base and provided an opening for a rival.” The Lincoln Project handed Trump these sharp piercing words, according to The New York Times.

‘You embarrassed them [and] you were never one of them.’

Trump told several associates and advisers that DeSantis’ endorsement would be “The magic words:”

‘Look, I helped Ron DeSantis at a level that nobody’s ever seen before. [DeSantis] didn’t have a chance” of winning without his help.’

DeSantis was the one who was “wielding the knife,” though. He criticized how Trump handled the pandemic in the beginning. In fact, the governor even said he “regretted not being more vocal in his complaints:”

‘Knowing now what I know then, if that was a threat earlier, I would have been much louder. [I never] thought in early March 2020 that the virus “would lead to locking down the country.’

The Lincoln Project people whispered into Trump’s ear that Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) did not want Trump. He was behind DeSantis, and “they’re in charge.”

After all:

‘They don’t respect you, Donald.’
