Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.), who just to be clear is among just 100 people across the entire United States who hold that level of political influence and power, doesn’t seem to have a super solid grasp on recent news events…

In a post on Twitter, she suggested that part of the U.S. government’s handling of the wreck of a submersible meant to visit the remains of the Titanic was… a planned distraction from supposed corruption issues involving Hunter Biden. Hunter is a son of the current president who for some reason has figured very prominently into GOP conspiracy theories, though there remains not even any documented link apparently between foreign business in which Hunter has engaged and the president. Republicans have run with claims of potentially millions of dollars in bribery implicating Hunter and Joe… with zero apparent evidence.

“If the U.S. Navy suspected that the Titan Submersible imploded just hours after it began its voyage, why did the Coast Guard wait until Thursday—the same day the IRS whistleblowers testified before Congress—to make their announcement to the public?” Blackburn posted on Friday.

When Blackburn made this public statement, there was — at that time — a public statement already available from an official with the United States Navy that said the information about the potential wreck was immediately shared with individuals involved with the attempt to locate the vehicle and its passengers. The Titanic sank in what are international waters, and relatedly, the submersible that was on its way there and recently imploded (per early indications) didn’t abide by any individual government’s safety regulations.

“I think we need to institute some kind of minimum IQ level for United States Senators,” George Conway, the conservative lawyer, replied to Blackburn online this weekend. “It doesn’t have to be very high, or even 100—it just needs to be enough to preclude brainlessness like this.”

“Intelligence has its limitations but conspiracy stupidity is infinite,” journalist Kara Swisher added. “Sometimes when I look at Tuberville, I think it’s clear who the dumbest member of the US Senate is. Then I look at Blackburn’s tweets and I’m not so sure,” professor Miranda Yaver of Wheaton College added. Yaver teaches in political science.
