Donald Trump, who remains generally in the lead in the Republican Party’s presidential primary for 2024, suggested on Truth Social this Thursday that President Joe Biden had lost his mental stability.
“I think that Crooked Joe Biden is not only dumb and incompetent, I believe he has gone MAD, a stark raving Lunatic, with his HORRIBLE AND COUNTRY THREATENING ENVIRONMENTAL, OPEN BORDERS, & DOJ/FBI WEAPONIZATION POLICIES,” Trump told his followers. “HE IS A MENTAL CATASTROPHE THAT IS LEADING OUR COUNTRY TO HELL!”
The Biden team does not have a policy of “open borders” under any strict definition of the term. Law enforcement personnel who are directly responsible for matters of the border have continued enforcing the law, and when put under pressure by Republicans in Congress, some of these figures directly involved in seeking to secure the border have attested to substantial support from the Biden administration.
“With Chief Modlin’s interview, the Committees have now heard from seven Chief Patrol Agents who all explained that the robust resources provided by the Biden-Harris Administration are strengthening Border Patrol agents in their mission at the southern border,” Democrats including Reps. Jamie Raskin (Md.) and Bennie Thompson (Miss.) recently said after hearing from John Modlin with the U.S. Border Patrol. Still, Republicans have been moving towards a potential impeachment of Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas and the president himself in relation to the southern border, where Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.) has even falsely claimed that foreign criminal organizations have taken operational control.
Republicans have also tried to use humanitarian concerns around migrants seeking shelter in the U.S. to jab at the president, though their claimed outrage may be difficult to square with policies like the physical barriers placed in and along the Rio Grande River by Texas GOP Governor Greg Abbott’s team. Two bodies were recently discovered in the river, including one stuck in the barriers that were assembled.
