Jenna Ellis, a lawyer who was infamously allied with Donald Trump as the then-outgoing president and allies of his sought to effectively block Joe Biden from taking office, was among the many allies of the former president who, with the former president himself, were indicted this week in Georgia. The charges allege that various defendants engaged in a criminal conspiracy targeting the state’s 2020 election results.

On Tuesday morning, Ellis responded. “The Democrats and the Fulton County DA are criminalizing the practice of law,” she claimed on X, which was formerly called Twitter. “I am resolved to trust the Lord and I will simply continue to honor, praise, and serve Him. I deeply appreciate all of my friends who have reached out offering encouragement and support.”

She quickly drew criticism. “I don’t know about you, but I plan to honor and to serve the Lord today by not engaging in any racketeering conspiracies,” George Conway, the conservative lawyer and commentator, quipped. Even a state legislator in Colorado responded. “I interrupt my hiatus from this awful website to say we’ve entered the “find out” phase of Ms. Ellis’s embarrassing legal career,” Democratic legislator Steven Woodrow remarked. “CO needs to disbar her. What an embarrassment to the State and the entire legal profession. Of course she will play victim. It’s all she knows.”

Others also questioned Ellis for having tied her actions to some kind of religious impetus. In fact, the efforts in which she participated — criminal or not — stood to effectively block the duly cast votes from marginalized communities in areas like central Georgia, where late-stage tabulation saw Biden nab his narrow and winning lead in the state. Areas where Ellis and her allies raised their most feverish complaints often had large Black populations, with others including Philadelphia and Detroit. For Ellis, besides the criminal charge alleging that she was part of a criminal conspiracy targeting Georgia’s election results, she was also accused of solicitation of violation of oath by public officer. That charge relates to participation by Ellis in the push for a sham slate of electors from Georgia for Trump.
