Right-wing interests seeking to effectively defend former President Donald Trump as he faces criminal charges in Georgia for alleged involvement in a conspiracy targeting that state’s election results from 2020 have been clamoring for the impeachment of Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, who originated the case against the former president and 18 allies of his.

The problem is that those supporting this endeavor haven’t actually reached the three-fifths majorities in each state legislative chamber that one participant in the push, state Sen. Colton Moore (R), claimed in a letter. Moore posted a copy of this letter, which contains a push for a special session of the state legislature, on social media. A spokesperson for the office of Georgia GOP Governor Brian Kemp, however, told Fox that the executive’s team hadn’t been provided evidence to support the assertion of three-fifths majorities in favor of a special session.

“We have not been provided any evidence to support that assertion,” spokesman Garrison Douglas said. Moore, who received public support from Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.), responded by characterizing the three-fifths majorities referenced in the letter as an aspiration and the letter itself as something he’d been hoping that colleagues of his in office would sign. The whole ordeal, with written communications containing potentially misleading claims and an accompanying push for a special session of the state legislature, recalls efforts after the last presidential election to assemble an effectively sham slate of electors from the state for Trump — an effort that directly inspired the new criminal charges from Willis.

Among the defendants is first-term Georgia GOP state Sen. Shawn Still, who was among those who attached their names as purported electoral college members backing Trump despite Biden’s Georgia win. Advocacy organizations including Fair Fight Action, which traces back to Stacey Abrams, are calling for the establishment of a constitutionally outlined review commission to examine the question of Still continuing to exercise political power while facing this indictment, which the organizations argue substantially relates to his current role in public office.
