New Yorkers do not stand with George Santos, the Republican Congressman currently representing a district mostly on Long Island who’s gone from exposure as a serial liar to facing multiple indictments from federal authorities (one of which was superseding, meaning it’s the active one). He was also the subject of a recent House Ethics Committee report accusing him of misusing his campaign funds on personal costs like OnlyFans, an adult content-oriented subscriptions service.

A Marist survey finished on November 15 found that three-quarters of New York state adults believe Santos should resign. (The share was an even 75 percent.) As that level of resignation support would suggest, Santos opposition was pretty consistent. Among Republicans, it was 68 percent, while even among those who said they voted for Trump in 2020, it was 63 percent. (Santos has publicly aligned himself with the Trump wing of the GOP — clearly to little success.) And the sampled New Yorkers weren’t just all Democratic diehards. In the same general population of New York state adults, 54 percent disapproved of Biden’s performance.

Santos, meanwhile, expects he’ll be expelled, which is something proposed in — among other sources — a recent resolution from Rep. Michael Guest (R-Miss.), who also serves as House Ethics Committee chairman. The Ethics report propelled public statements from a significant number of members who’d previously helped Santos stick around that they’d now be opposing his continuance in his seat in Congress. Santos, for his part, finally caved before the long obvious public opposition and stated recently that he would not be seeking another term, though he credited the decision to some kind of moral opposition to colleagues of his in Congress.

And just think. So much of this started with the revelation of just how extensively Santos had misrepresented his background, even claiming a familial connection to Nazi persecution of all things that’s also been questioned.
