Former GOP Congresswoman Liz Cheney of Wyoming was among those speaking out this week after former President Donald Trump saw a slew of victories in GOP presidential primaries held on Tuesday, further establishing his path to the party’s nomination for the 2024 general elections. Trump’s last remaining serious challenger, Nikki Haley, dropped out following Tuesday’s races. Haley, a former governor, once served in Trump’s presidential administration.

“The GOP has chosen. They will nominate a man who attempted to overturn an election and seize power. We have eight months to save our republic & ensure Donald Trump is never anywhere near the Oval Office again. Join me in the fight for our nation’s freedom,” Cheney wrote Wednesday on X, formerly called Twitter. Her post linked to the website for a political action committee (PAC) associated with her called The Great Task.

Cheney became well-known when still in office for opposition to Trump, singling out his lies about the 2020 election and subsequently argued incitement of the Capitol riot in early 2021 that put the lives of police officers, government officials, Capitol staff, and others at risk. She ultimately lost her seat to pro-Trump Republican Harriet Hageman, who prevailed in that year’s primary covering Wyoming’s sole seat in the U.S. House.

Haley, meanwhile, did not endorse Trump in her parting remarks announcing the suspension of her primary campaign, breaking with the approach of fellow failed GOP primary contenders like Ron DeSantis and Tim Scott, the governor of Florida and a South Carolina Senator, respectively. Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), the outgoing Senate GOP leader, also endorsed Trump following Tuesday’s elections.

None of those who announced primary campaigns against Trump ever actually notched significant political inroads against him. Trump, who didn’t even bother participating in the televised debates held amid the primary contest, has won almost all of the state-level GOP nominating contests held so far, even as he also faces four criminal cases culminating in a first trial starting later this month.
