In recent commentary posted to his knock-off social media site Truth Social, former President Donald Trump declared the United States a “Third World Nation,” characterizing his alleged mistreatment in this country’s judicial system as on par with what happens in such a place.

Trump’s message accompanied the Republican presidential candidate officially reaching the number of convention delegates needed to secure his party’s nomination for this year’s elections, though that development was already expected. And before Trump reached that extensive of a victory, his final remaining serious challenger — Nikki Haley — already dropped out.

“We are now, under Crooked Joe Biden, a Third World Nation, which uses the Injustice System to go after his political opponent, ME! But fear not, we will not fail, we will take back our once great Country, put AMERICA FIRST, and MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN – GREATER THAN EVER BEFORE,” Trump wrote online.

The ex-president has used such language previously, though he has sometimes employed less direct framing. It’s all led to outrage at the leading candidate for Republicans’ presidential nomination essentially basing his campaign on hatred not just for the policies of the current administration he’s hoping to replace but also for the direction the United States as a whole has taken, essentially sweeping millions upon millions of Americans into his proclamations of unfolding doom and gloom.

“Trump just called America a “third world country.” With all due respect (which is none), eat dirt scumbag. This is the best country on earth. You, are our biggest embarrassment and stain. But you’ll be over in a year,” former GOP Congressman Adam Kinzinger of Illinois said on X, the social site formerly called Twitter. “Morning Joe” also addressed it.

“The hatred for America continues from the extreme MAGA Trumpers,” said Joe Scarborough. “Why? Why do they hate America?… There are entire news networks that are dedicated to spreading the lie that America is weak, dedicated to spreading the lie that the United States military is not the strongest in the world. Those are lies.”
