GOP’s Mike Johnson Is Making Up Fairy-Tale Scenarios Of Extensive Illegal Voting

In a new interview with Fox News, Speaker of the House Rep. Mike Johnson (R-La.) complained feverishly about a supposed possibility of undocumented immigrants to the U.S. participating in elections… though there is zero evidence of this happening at any remotely extensive scale, and it’s already blocked (on the federal level) in law.

Johnson discussed a supposedly possible hypothetical scenario involving hundreds of thousands of illegal votes cast by undocumented immigrants, something that the currently rigorous supervision of U.S. elections would absolutely not allow in the same manner that the handling of U.S. elections debunked Trump’s 2020 election fraud claims nearly by default. How does Johnson think voting works? That anybody can walk in to a polling place anytime and just say they want to cast a ballot?

“One thing we need to do, and this is what we’re about — the House Republicans are about to enter legislation into the record that will ensure that no illegal can vote in a federal election. You have to prove you’re a citizen instead of, as the law currently states, just checking a box to say it. Maria, we have so many illegals in the country. They could tilt the election if this happened. If just one in 100 illegals decided to vote in a federal election, it could swing Congressional races, and it might even swing a presidential election,” Johnson claimed to Maria Bartiromo.

Though there is variance in how different local and state officials handle the process, jurisdictions around the United States already require registration, ID, and similar measures before actually casting a ballot and then put those ballots under rigorous review! Mail-in/absentee ballots, which are often submitted with a signature, undergo such review, comparing the submitted signatures to government records… and if the authorities don’t give undocumented immigrants regular licenses or ID cards, there’s one (of many) paths by which illegal voting (at the scale Johnson suggests is possible) would be uncovered.
