Donald Trump can continue to pretend that everything is in his administration is going swimmingly, but the facts contradict that. His quickly sinking ship is on display more than ever as yet another members of his team jumps overboard.
Gen. Jim Mattis is not “retiring” in the traditional sense of the word. He’s resigning because he is unable to serve under Trump while he treats our allies like enemies and our enemies like friends. Eventually, Trump’s obvious kowtowing to Russia was going to catch up to him. Now, pulling out of Syria seems to have finally done it even for his Republican allies.
Trump also tried to pretend on Thursday morning that his move to pull out of Syria made Russia very unhappy. This is also a lie. When asked at a press conference, Vladimir Putin expressed his delight at the decision, saying that he felt it was the right move and that the U.S. presence in Syria had never been “legitimate.”
This is not a situation that Trump is going to be able to excuse or talk his way out of. People in the GOP and in the Republican party appear to have had enough of this reckless, compromised, out-of-control presidency. What everyone with any sense knew in November of 2016 is finally hitting the GOP like a ton of bricks.
