Donald Trump comes up with the messages himself. That is how his White House communications work. He did not see the irony that he chose as his setting a Medicare event to make this announcement.
In spite of the impeachment inquiry picking up speed, the president headed to Florida. It is a state that he must win in 2020.
He went to The Villages, Florida to talk to his supporters in spite of the fact he condemned himself by releasing a serious summary of a conversation where he coerced the new President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky to dig up dirt on his presidential opponent. The reason he damned himself and continued to invite other countries to help him was that he saw nothing wrong with his action. It did not make sense to him, so he ignored it.
However, it was a very serious crime to involve one let alone more countries in interfering in the US presidential campaign in 2020. Saying it openly made no difference. He held up direly-needed military support from the Ukrainian president. Today, he held the tariffs over China’s head. Then, suggested maybe they would like to investigate the Bidens.
At The Villages, Trump talked about health care and Medicare. Even though he managed to stay primarily on script, a few zingers slipped out.
He said the impeachment inquiry was “pure corruption” and “crap.” He added the Democrats were motivated simply by a desire to win the presidency in 2020, according to The Tampa-Bay Times:
‘That’s why (Democrats) do the impeachment crap because they know they can never beat us fairly.’
At that point, he urged the seniors to cheerlead him with chants of “eight more years.” Granted, his audience was deep red, and he was there to sign an executive order. He said that it was to increase Medicare choices and slash regulations for the purpose:
‘[So doctors] can spend less time on paperwork and more time on the patients that they love.’
Seniors may support the president, but they are wise enough to realize their doctors do not typically love them. Like, maybe, but not love. Then, Trump claimed that Democrats would “totally obliterate Medicare:”
‘They want to raid Medicare to fund a thing called socialism.’
Here is the thing. Democrats like Medicare. They like it so much that they want it for everyone. They will not raise Medicare prices. The savings comes from having a transaction cost $3 instead of $20 under private insurance.
Sumter County chapter chair of “Trump Team 2020” Suzanne Days formed the group, because she and others did not feel the state GOP was not Trump enough:
‘The Democrats are self-imploding. Many of us are on fixed incomes and so if the price of Medicare goes up or the cost of our medicines go up,” their health would be adversely affected, she said, adding: “If they were going to try to do (Medicare-for-All) for anybody it should be our own people, not people who are coming across the border.’
One of the 125,000 residents James Harbison waited hours in the scorching heat to get into the event said:
‘Three words: impeachment for what? The president’s been investigated since before he got into office … let him do his job.’
Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Alex Azar, told the Times/Herald that Trump has made health care, especially for seniors a priority. Interesting, given that his budget proposed spending cuts that would “mostly” affect the physicians.
The protesters were out though. A Trump Baby mylar balloon rested on one woman’s walker. The protestors wore shirts emblazoned with Hate has no place here. Dee Melvin said “it’s time” to impeach Trump.
‘He’s selling our country away to the highest bidder.’
But on Twitter, Trump dismissed the idea of cooperation with a tweet, one in a days-long tweetstorm that has warned of Civil War II and suggested the House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff (D-CA) could be “arrested for treason.”
