Donald Trump hopped onto his helicopter Marine One this morning after talking to the press. It took him to Air Force One, and that flight landed in Houston Texas. He showed up for two significant reasons.

Narendra Modi personally invited POTUS to attend his Houston rally. The Indian prime minister said, according to PBS:

‘When I met him for the first time, he said to me ‘India has a true friend in the White House. Mr. President, this morning in Houston, you can hear the heartbeat of this great partnership in this celebration of the world’s two largest democracies.’

Trump told the crowd of 50,000 who had come to see Modi that India has been spending billions of dollars on defense equipment built in this country:

‘India has never invested in the United States like it is doing today. We’re doing the same thing in India.’

Then, Trump spoke about border security. Texas shared a substantial border with Mexico:

‘We are taking unprecedented action to secure our southern border and stop illegal immigration.’

At the Howdy Modi rally, Prime Minister Modi got a bigger applause from the Republican crowd in Texas than Trump:

‘Modi gets bigger applause than Trump at a rally in deep-red Texas. ‘

Authorities blamed the storm Imelda for at least five deaths after over three feet of rain (40 inches) fell on the city. Trump said:

‘This was a really bad one. My administration will not rest until you have fully recovered, restored and rebuilt.’

‘Incredible!’

‘The USA Loves India!’

As it turned out, the audience, which was “about 80, 90% Indian” heritage. Hans Nichols of MSBC News reported that most of them were “professional Republicans:”

‘The president said there were more than 50,000 people here. It does look pretty full. It seems to be about 80, 90% Indian American. When I talk to some people on the sidelines here, a lot of them say they’re Republicans. They say they support their president. When you press them they say, look, this is still Texas. We are mostly professional Republicans and, yes, we’re also here to see Modi. That said, on the applause meter, Modi is getting bigger applause than the president of the United States. He’s brought this place down several times.’

Modi’s video said:

‘This was a gathering of mostly Indian-Americans who are also Republicans, and they gave louder applause to the Prime Minister of India than to Donald Trump in a state that is the most vital to Republican hopes of keeping the White House in 2020. If Republicans ever again lose the state of Texas in a presidential election, they will be defeated in a landslide. Trump has huge problems in Texas. Recent polls show Joe Biden beating him in the Lone Star State, and his reception in Houston did nothing to quell the rumbles that Texas could be in play in 2020, and Trump could lose the lynchpin of the GOP’s Electoral College strategy.’
