During an appearance on CNN, former GOP Congressman Adam Kinzinger of Illinois suggested that former President Donald Trump is losing his stable grip on reality as the ex-commander-in-chief continues to commit himself to a feverish defense amid his multiple criminal cases, a list that now includes charges related to his attempts after the last presidential election to stay in office.

Kinzinger was asked specifically about arguably threatening comments that Trump recently made online in close proximity to other complaints about the federal criminal charges. “IF YOU GO AFTER ME, I’M COMING AFTER YOU!” Trump said. A spokesperson associated with Trump claimed these comments referred to special interest groups and super PACs, straining credibility for some. Prosecutors subsequently began pursuing a protective order that would restrict some of what the ex-president can say — though not everything that he can say about the various criminal proceedings, as Trump has claimed he’s facing.

“You see a man that is literally, I think, literally losing his mind,” Kinzinger told Anderson Cooper on CNN in footage originally flagged by Raw Story. “I don’t even mean that metaphorically. I think he’s actually going insane. And so no, I don’t think it’s just protected political speech when you make a threat because look, there are people out there that are gonna take that seriously, and they go to take action. I had a number of them reaching out to me in my office saying that Donald Trump said something bad at me, that they’re taking that literally and they’re gonna come after me and my 18-month-old kid.”

Kinzinger has been widely criticized in Trump’s circles for his opposition to the former president’s false claims about the integrity of the 2020 presidential election, which the ex-commander-in-chief still claims was somehow rigged against him and for Joe Biden. Trump claimed in some of his latest attempts at a defense that President Biden is personally behind both his charging and the pursuit by prosecutors of a protective order, but there is no real-world evidence of this.
