GOP’s House Speaker Mike Johnson Taken To School: ‘Why Don’t You Get To Work?’

A recent post on X (formerly Twitter) from Speaker of the House Rep. Mike Johnson (R-La.) complains in intense terms about a decision by NBC News to drop former Republican National Committee (RNC) chairwoman Ronna McDaniel as a paid contributor after all, though Johnson has, you know… a job that isn’t commentating on corporate decisions.

“NBC “News” is an absolute disgrace,” the House Speaker complained.

“Cool tweet. Why don’t you get to work and fund border security, Ukraine aid, and the needs in the Middle East?” said a post in reply from Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.).

Though Johnson and Republicans complain feverishly about the border, party members have rejected a series of opportunities for serious action, including funding proposed by the Biden administration and a bipartisan border and immigration deal put forward in the Senate that some characterized as among the most serious border legislation in a while. At issue are possibilities of hiring boosts on border security teams, development of the nation’s technological arsenal for going after dangerous drugs like fentanyl, and expansions in number to the judges handling immigration cases that would speed up the process, eroding backlogs.

And Johnson, who currently leads the GOP-controlled House, has resisted a foreign aid package already passed by the Senate on a bipartisan basis that includes support for Ukraine.

Democrats recently bailed out the House yet again, though they’re in the minority. House Democrats provided actually more votes than Republicans for a recent government funding package, securing its approval and helping avert a shutdown. Johnson was in support of the arrangement, though in tandem with it moving through the House, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) unveiled a motion for his removal of the same sort that sent California Republican Kevin McCarthy packing from the House’s leadership.
